Continuous traumatic stress in Gaza: when caregivers and communities share the same crisis
International Review of Psychiatry
"In Gaza, traumatic events do not belong only to the past. Repeated attacks, displacement, bereavement and deprivation continue to shape daily life, including the work of those providing healthcare. Drawing on my experience as a doctor living and working in Gaza during 2023-2025 and on selected clinical and humanitarian literature, I examine the usefulness of continuous traumatic stress (CTS) as a framework for understanding distress under ongoing threat."
The BMJ
"Where I work at Al-Shifa Hospital there is no foreseeable prospect of recovery. Doctors are left with no choice but to improvise care with whatever is available as severe shortages of essential medicines and supplies persist. Our hospital once operated across 10 functional buildings, but now only five are still operating, and not all are fully functional...All of Gaza’s 36 hospitals have been damaged or rendered non-functional and more than 70% of medical laboratories are out of action. Around 50% of essential medicines and 64% of cancer drugs are fully out of stock because they are being blocked or restricted by Israeli authorities. Without an immediate end to the killing, full and unrestricted entry of humanitarian aid, and the removal of all barriers to medical supplies, personnel, and patients, this situation will continue... Palestinian-led reconstruction of the healthcare system must begin, alongside restoration of essential services and protection of healthcare as required under international law."
