Urgent health update: Consequences of war on Gaza, the West Bank/East Jerusalem, and Lebanon - October 3, 2026
This week we present a review of the latest journal articles.
Use the links below to explore our thematic collections of peer-reviewed health-related literature on Palestine. The collections are stored in PubMed to make searching and filtering easier. The collections are updated on a bi-weekly basis and currently include articles published between January 1, 2026 and October 2, 2026.
Publications from the past two weeks include:
Cardiology in the Young
Read a young doctor's account of learning and practicing medicine in Palestine. "Hardship is not a substitute for educational opportunity, nor should adversity be considered an educational advantage. The costs are real and often uncompensated. Nevertheless, they have shaped the physician I am becoming. I will graduate, practise, and, I hope, build a clinical career shaped by these years rather than defined by them. The interrupted lectures, the rotations attended after long detours, the examinations taken on days when concentration was a discipline rather than a state, and the quiet evenings spent reading with one ear toward the window, and none of these will appear on a curriculum vitae. They will appear, I expect, in the way I sit with patients who are afraid, in the way I think about access, and in the patience I try to bring to people whose lives have been interrupted in ways medicine alone cannot repair."
The Lancet Global Health
A cross-sectional nutritional surveillance study conducted by the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East assessed the prevalence of wasting malnutrition among children aged 6–59 months in the Gaza Strip following the declared ceasefire in October 2025. The prevalence of wasting declined from 15.7% in mid-August 2025, to 3.2% by late April 2026. "Wasting was more prevalent in males and initially higher in younger children but decreased to 5% or less in all groups. Wasting generally tracked trends in truck entry and lentil market prices. Preschool child wasting declined in Gaza over 9 months from active war to 6 months post-ceasefire, despite continued military attacks and severely constrained living conditions."
